About

When you look in the mirror, you see one of two things…

A lost black sheep struggling with who she really is.

Or the phoenix within who’s ready to spread her wings.

I see the phoenix.

And I’m passionate about helping you see her too.

Around Here…

We choose and create our future.

We may not have chosen our families, our past, or the things that have happened to us. But we realize our ability to choose a new path and create what’s next in our lives. We don’t diminish our past or our stories – we use them to determine how we will live from this moment forward. In this choice we are changing the course of future generations.

We are never alone.

We may have felt like the black sheep in our families and environment, but we recognize that we are never alone. We understand that the isolation we’ve felt was refining us for where we will go next and we now know that there are millions of black sheep who can relate. On an even deeper level, we also recognize that God never left us and has been with us all along. We commit to leaning deeper into this truth and reject the lies of isolation.

We only do real.

We drop the masks that have been created over time and instead choose authenticity, honesty, and openness. We know that healing requires our willingness to be ourselves, rather than pretending to be someone else. We create space for our inner phoenix to rise and know this is a process. We give ourselves grace and compassion as we learn the most truthful parts of ourselves and how to live as her. We value integrity and realness with those we choose to be in relationship with.

Respect is non-negotiable.

There is plenty of room for all of us to rise and fulfill our God-given purposes. We admire the uniqueness each individual brings to the table and know there is space for us all to have a voice. We honor ourselves enough to speak up and use our voices with wisdom. We honor every part of our journey that got us to where we are today, using it as a jumping off point to spread our wings. We proudly look to the future, respecting ourselves and others as we navigate life.

I’m Kayla.

When I was 5, I stopped using my voice when I ended up in the hospital for an extended period of time. From then on, I allowed family dynamics, guilt, and other people’s opinions to keep me quiet and demolish my self esteem.

Until I didn’t…

I’ve been a writer for as long as I can remember.

And it was through words written on a page that I found my voice again.

From 6th grade when I was chosen to write the school poem in that year’s yearbook through college as an English major to more recently writing a book and sharing blogs.

What I discovered was how to unravel the years of patterns that kept me hiding who I truly am.

I realized that I was carrying layers from the generations that came before me that I didn’t need to keep carrying.

I became more focused on finding the truth about who God made me to be than the loud voices around me who tried to tell me who I was.

And through it all, I found my voice.

I let go of always feeling like the black sheep and instead chose to spread my wings.

I hope you will too…

Through your time here, my desire is that you’ll gain insight and understanding that is applicable to your life and helps you navigate writing a new story for where you want to go.

At the bottom of it all, we are each on our own journey and it’s not going to look perfect, or even like anyone else’s. It’s ours and we can choose our own path.

So let this be a place to learn how to find your voice, while I share my journey to finding mine.
