Mask/No Mask

You can have many people around you

Wanting the best for you

and still feel like you’re alone.

Like no one understands the real you

But you are constantly hiding behind a mask to be someone who you are not

I remember a therapist once told me that I was hiding who I was behind a mask

And I freaked out

How did she know?

Instead of continuing with therapy to help assist with peeling off the masks I ran

I ended my therapy session and jetted out of there

I was a coward

And it took me many years to realize that I wear too many masks

The only time I have ever felt safe to take them off was with my fiancé.

When I first met him, I pretty much said fuck it I’ll be 100% me and see if he likes me for me.

I was 21 at the time. And now 13 years later, he still likes me for me. And knows wayyy too many of my moods to be able to handle me.

But I digress.

I’ve hidden behind so many masks that they became a habit.

You got your work mask

You got your immediate family mask

Your coworker mask

Your friend mask

And so on and so forth that you even forgot who you are because of all the different masks.

And you get overwhelmed when someone really truly cares about you and wants to know who you are. You freeze. Because you don’t know or you don’t remember.

The masks protected you. But to what end?

Every time I take a mask off, I find a new layer of myself that I love.

I do think that using the excuse that I’m an introvert helped me to create masks that no longer fit me.

And as the masks come off, this sense of freedom and peace washed over me.

I am loved. I am enough. And I am worthy.

All the things that I was told that I wasn’t, I am changing because I am all those things. And so are you.

So what mask are you willing to let go of to embrace the real you?
